MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Fraud investigators say an organized crime ring operating in the Twin Cities could be involved in up to 40 percent of the area's fraudulent check activity. Federal and state authorities are working to unravel the sophisticated fraud ring that steals identities, raids bank and credit card accounts and defrauds businesses and banks nationwide.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A state lawmaker from Columbia Heights wants to give families more power to choose funeral practices for a deceased loved one. ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — House and Senate committees consider a compromise today on legislation that preserves a government health plan for poor adults. VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) — Authorities have searched both by ground and by air for a missing Vermillion woman but have come up empty, and the extensive search efforts for 52-year-old Barbara Zenk have been called off. Clay County Sheriff Andy Howe says authorities have searched the area on foot, brought in a tracking dog and also sent up a plane.

ELK POINT, S.D. (AP) — A rural Elk Point man accused of raping a young girl has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental defect. Thirty-six-year-old Trent Hemmingsen faces two counts of first-degree rape in Union County. He will undergo a psychological evaluation.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — The Heartland Consumers Power District is receiving a $740,000 federal loan and a $300,000 grant to build a renewable energy training facility in Miner County. The funding comes through a federal Agriculture Department program.

Iowa News

It turns out the briefcase belonged to someone who had been arrested and contained a cell phone and an alarm clock — nothing dangerous.

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — A fire in Mason City destroyed a former lumberyard warehouse, but no injuries have been reported. Building owner John Boland says he stored several vintage cars in the warehouse, including street rods and restored old trucks. Fire officials are trying to figure out what caused the blaze.

INDIANOLA, Iowa (AP) — Authorities are investigating the death of a rural Indianola man who was apparently crushed when a vehicle he was working on fell off its jack. An autopsy is planned on 40-year-old Michael James Martin.
